Overview
You can modify several settings in plan models, such as the core metric, granularity, and app availability.
Plan model settings
To find the plan model's settings:
- On the navigation bar, click Planning > Plan Models.
- Select a plan model.
- Click the Settings tab.
The following sections describe each plan model setting.
Core metric
The core metric defines which segments are included in the plan, only the segments of the plan population that have a non-zero value for the core metric will be included. For example, if you select Headcount as the core metric of your plan model, and the Marketing segment has no headcount, then you won't see Marketing in plans made with this model. As the core metric defines what population exists within the plan, it's important that your core metric has values defined for your entire planning population. Often this metric is a count metric for the existing population that should be planned upon.
Tip: You can add rows that have a zero value for the core metric to your plan through auto promotion. For more information, see "Auto promote rows from overlay data" in Limits and Targets.
When you first set up your plan model, you can select any metric available in your application to serve as the core metric. Once a metric is chosen, the model automatically streamlines the initial setup by creating two key components:
- An input that directly references the selected core metric.
- A plan item whose baseline value is linked to this newly created input.
This initial configuration brings your core metric into your plan model and provides you with a starting point.
As your model evolves and incorporates more data through additional inputs, you can choose to change the core metric to a different input. However, it's important to note that once your model is built, you can only select from the metrics that are currently being used within existing inputs in your model to become the new core metric. You cannot select a completely new metric from your application at this stage without first adding it as a separate input.
Example: A common and often reliable choice for the core metric is Headcount. Headcount is useful because the metric itself defines the population that should be planned upon.
Granularity
The time divisions you want to plan in. Some metrics work better as monthly or quarterly. We suggest to plan in monthly granularity because metrics tend to work best in those time frames.
Available in app
Allow this model to be used to create new plans. If turned off, new plans cannot be created with this model. Existing plans using this model will be unaffected.
Use this toggle to hide old or unused plan models. For example, when making changes to a plan model, we suggest duplicating the model instead of making changes directly to the model itself. Once you are happy with your changes, you can make the older version of the model no longer available in the application so users are only using the newer model.
